Welcome...

...to the home page of the Mars Society - Ohio Chapter!  Ohio is the birthplace of aviation, home of many aviation and aerospace pioneers, and a hotbed of ongoing aerospace research.  From the Wright brothers' first airplane to John Glenn's first US orbit to Neil Armstrong's first lunar footprint, Ohio has led the way.  Today, Cleveland's NASA John Glenn Research Center supports cutting-edge aerospace research (like member Geoffrey Landis' Mars-2001 lander experiments) that will lead us ON TO MARS !!

The purpose of the Mars Society is:

To further the goal of the exploration and settlement of the Red Planet. This will be done by:

  1. Broad public outreach to instill the vision of pioneering Mars.
  2. Support of ever more aggressive government funded Mars exploration programs around the world.
  3. Conducting Mars exploration on a private basis.

Starting small, with hitchhiker payloads on government funded missions, we intend to use the credibility that such activity will engender to mobilize larger resources that will enable stand-alone private robotic missions and ultimately human exploration.

Mars Polar Lander: What Went Wrong ?

Although we may never know how MPL failed (see 01 Dec 99 and 15 Dec 99 Newsletters), there are plenty of reasons why we might never have heard from either the MPL or the two Deep Space 2 probes, Amundsen and Scott. A graphic representation of the four most likely causes is given here.

MARS - Mars Arctic Research Station

Mars Arctic Simulation Base. The Mars Society intends to build such a base as its first major project.
If humans are to live on Mars - even for brief periods - they are going to have to be supported by a wide range of infrastructure. They'll need a place to work, rest and live. They'll need power, light, food, water, heat. They'll need robust transportation, equipment able to operate in low temperatures and "hostile" environments.

In the summer of the year 2000, a unique experiment will begin in the Arctic Circle when the Mars Society deploys its Mars Arctic Research Station, the world's first fully-simulated Mars Base.

The MARS project will enable scientists, engineers and even astronauts to test the equipment and technology (habitation, transportation, life support, recycling, etc.), that may be deployed during a human mission to Mars.

The base will be an extension of the Haughton-Mars Expeditions of this year and the past.

One of the Society's goals is to convince the next administration that the American Space Program needs a mission worthy of a 13 billion a year Space Agency. We believe that can only be the human exploration of Mars. We currently have the technology required to establish a permanent human presence on Mars within 10 years at a cost of roughly 15% of the existing NASA budget. The key is to adopt a "live-off the land" philosophy, making rocket propellants and other necessary mission consumables on the surface of Mars. Practically no new technologies need to be created, everything that is necessary is already in hand. We need your voice if we are going to convince our elected representatives that this should be the case. Please join the Mars Society today.

ON TO MARS!!!
