2008 Convention in Denver, Colorado
|
Here is Jerry's log:
Greatly enjoyed attending the Mars Society Annual
Convention last week at Boulder, Colorado. Since I was the only attendee from
Ohio, I thought I'd write a brief report. As usual, the plenary sessions and the
tracks were extremely interesting, with a lot of material to stimulate the grey
matter. Especially enjoyed hearing Dr. Carol Stoker talk about the latest
results from the Phoenix Mars Lander, Dr. Carol Porco talk about the Cassini
mission, Dr. Matt Mountain talk about the Hubble Space Telescope, and Dr. Robert
Zubrin was great in the talks he gave also. A highlight was the Mars Project Challenge. There were about 30 entries in the contest for the next major Mars Society project. The 10 finalists made presentations to the attendees on Friday evening. Mars Society members could vote for the best project via the web, and a lot of the audience proceeded to vote following the presentations on computers that were set up in the registration area. Many excellent projects were presented, and I for one had difficulty deciding which one I preferred. The chosen project (a microsatellite that will demonstrate artificial gravity) looks very exciting. A couple of the other ideas may get implemented also even though they didn't win the top prize. Next year's annual convention will be in Washington, DC. Last time the convention was in Washinton DC several Ohio members attended, so I'm hoping this will happen again. On to Mars! Jerry Black
